Will Power

I read an interesting thing recently and the long-n-short of it was that you need a "will" to do anything. Although a childish moral but I think it applies to everything from personal aspects to company aspects.

Here are my interpretations of some of the biggest economic players' wills:

Exxon and Shell: Will to make more money.
Microsoft: Will to dominate the PC market.
Sun: Will to make something better than Linux.
Apple: Will to make cool stuff.
Intel: Will to shrink the chip fabrication size.

Anyway, that's not the main point of this article. The thing is that most of the wills (like the ones above) are made up of too many small wills and in the end they boil down to personal level. You might have heard things like "self-motivation", "self-managed" and "self-learning" when applying for jobs etc. The "self" aspect actually reflects the will power of the individual. If you don't have the will to improve, you will never be a "self-improving" person and hence you will have problems managing your life. Similarly, if you don't have a will to learn, you will never "learn" anything useful.

I have met a lot of people who haven't learned any new technology for the last decade or so and are mostly stuck with their own knowledge pool. When I analyze these people I find that they have only one thing in common. They lack the "will to learn" which in my opinion is the worst thing you can be missing from your life.

Remember, if you lose any of your wills you are losing your desires. If you are losing your desires, you are losing a part of yourself and it means you are turning into someone else (i.e. a different person). You should try to judge that person sooner rather than later as you are the onle person who can decide whether it's a good or a bad change.

People You Really Hate to See at Your Workplace

I have been professionally working for more than a decade now and I have to admit that I have met some really strange characters in this time. In all the companies I have worked with, there have always been a special kind of individuals who can only be described by following characteristics:

  • They are pretty regular in terms of attendance.
  • They think they are smarter then everyone else.
  • They look down on others.
  • They hate the process and technologies that are embraced by others.
  • They always think that others are over complicating things to make their lives difficult.
  • They hate changes.
  • They love to impose their ideas on others.
  • They love insulting others.
  • They show off their extra-professional skills i.e. skills that have nothing to do with their current jobs.
My questions to these people are:
  • If you hate everyone so much and you think your company is completely wrong, why don't you quit and find another job.
  • If the answer to previous question is something like "I want to improve... blah blah" then why don't you improve your life by switching your job and find a company more in synch with your mindset.
  • Why can't you just shut up and get down to earth like everyone else and be more synergistic?
  • Why don't you just quit and go away for good!!!???

If There Were no Computers...

I have always belived that humanity exists for one and only one purpose: "To exploit this world and improve their lives". Ofcourse, no offence is intended to any religious or anti-religious group or anyone else for this matter.

Seriously, why would someone invent a thing like computer which enriches the lives of few people at the cost of increasing the unemployment rate of the world. It also increases the world power consumption by hosting millions of websites on millions of servers running in airconditioned and secured rooms using as few people as possible.

Don't get me wrong but I am a technologist by nature and I love and live with computers. Infact, I cannot imagine a life without my "computers" and the only time I don't use one is when I am on vacations with a complete mental resting therapy. I just like to imagine what life would have been like if computers were not invented and we still used non electronic means to do our tasks.

Why?

I believe it's about time I start blogging and litter the Internet with whatever is in my brain.
